Case study of custom plastic pallets
Plastic pallets for satisfied customers
The customer's need
With a 25 percent share of the market and annual revenue of 4 billion Swiss francs, the Givaudan conglomerate is a world leader in the fragrance and flavorings industry. Every fourth flavored food contains a Givaudan flavoring additive, which means the products must be transported to nearly every country.
The Swiss flavor powerhouse exports 100 tons of flavoring concentrates from its factories, but its customers were no longer satisfied with receiving the products on wooden pallets.
Requirements
Plastic pallets have obvious advantages here. They can be integrated trouble-free into Givaudan customers’ conveyor systems. With no wood abrasion, or defective slats or blocks, the pallets can’t cause expensive trouble in the automated processes. Their weight and dimensional stability, their resistance to moisture, and naturally also hygiene considerations, made plastic pallets an economically reasonable alternative to wooden pallets.
Even in the food industry, using a pallet from recycled plastic obviously causes no problems, as long as these hygiene- sensitive products do not come into direct contact with the load carrier. Givaudan’s flavoring products are always shipped well packaged, in bottles, canisters, barrels or boxes.
The Solution: Eco E5
- Exceptional weight-to-load capacity: Although they weigh only 12.0 kg (PE), these efficiently designed pallets can carry up to 1,500 kg dynamic.
- Rackable: The Eco E5 can handle 500 kgs even in high racks.
- Hygienic: Plastic pallets meet the strict standards of the ISPM 15 and are resistant to insects, bacteria, and fungi.
- Conveyor friendly: Smart construction means it won’t cause abrasion or other trouble to automated conveyor systems.

„We had to fulfill the customer’s wishes. And he wanted plastic pallets“
Americo Fumagalli, Materials Manager, Givaudan SA
„Customers don’t want wooden pallets in their supply chain under any circumstances. Those pallets can get wet during their sea voyage. They can splinter, chip, collect bacteria, or cause other kinds of trouble. They want to move our goods directly onto their own conveyors in their production area without having to switch pallets.“
