Cabka brings the circular economy to the automotive industry with the new CabFold Hybrid
Cabka has developed the new CabFold® Hybrid in collaboration with the automobile manufacturer BMW Group to store and ship body and chassis components.
Cabka has developed the new CabFold® Hybrid in collaboration with the automobile manufacturer BMW Group to store and ship body and chassis components. The European market leader for reusable transport packaging made of recycled plastic is also a certified disposal company of used plastics for the BMW Group. The CabFold® Hybrid, which has been developed from scratch, has a recycled content of 94 percent.
With the new large load carriers from Cabka, the BMW Group can reduce emissions in packaging logistics. With more than 10.000 containers, CO2 emissions are reduced by around 3,000 tonnes per year. Thanks to the completely new design, the delivery container offers the largest internal volume in its class at 755 litres. This means more space for the goods to be transported and more efficient use of space during transport. The BMW Group can permanently reduce the empties during storage and return transport to less than a third of the output volume. This frees up valuable space for the car manufacturer, allows it to increase the number of containers per return transport and thus significantly reduce the costs and emissions incurred. 288 folded CabFold® Hybrids fit in a truck.
The new foldable containers made of recycled plastic expand the BMW Group's standard container pool and are used instead of gitterboxes Storing these mostly rigid and heavy containers and organizing the return transport requires a lot of space and caused high costs. Due to the open design, those responsible often had to use additional disposable cardboard boxes with which they could protect the transported goods from dirt and rust infestation. The CabFold® Hybrid, which has been adapted for the BMW Group, is compatible with the lattice box and can be stacked and transported together with it. This makes it possible to gradually switch to the new large load carrier. It thus fits seamlessly into the existing logistics process and makes it much more efficient, safer and more sustainable. Marius Poppe, Sales Director Customized Solutions at Cabka, sums up the result of the cooperation: "We are proud to have developed such an innovative large load carrier together with the BMW Group. This cooperation also illustrates our special nature in the market: we can be both a disposal company for used plastics and a development partner for state-of-the-art load carriers."
A decisive criterion for both cooperation partners is that the new CabFold® Hybrid meets all the important cornerstones of a circular strategy: It is made of 94 percent recycled plastic, is durable, reusable and has been designed in such a way that it is easy to repair. The modular design makes it possible to remove individual elements of the side walls or floor support and replace them with new ones. Old containers are finally integrated into the recycling process, so users can close the material cycle.
With a tare weight of 52,5 kilograms, the CabFold® Hybrid is significantly lighter than comparable large load carriers made of plastic and 40 percent lighter than the lattice box used previously. With dimensions of 1,240 x 835 x 990 millimetres, it is comparable to the previous steel lattice box. Its low weight simplifies handling and reduces CO2 emissions during truck transport. Another advantage of the new container is that it can be assembled and dismantled both manually and automatically in just a few seconds – there is no need for a specific sequence when folding the side walls. These protect the transported goods from dust and dirt and enable outdoor storage. The smooth surfaces make the CabFold® Hybrid easy to clean, and the risk of injury is also low.
